Sometimes new information results in minor changes to a theory. But sometimes new information results in a theory being discarded as incorrect. An example of an incorrect theory that was disproved by the discovery of new information is Ptolemy’s theory of the solar system. the original cell theory. the germ theory. plate tectonic theory.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think its Ptolemy's Theory of the Solar System.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm thinking ptolemy's or the original cell theory..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here let me check some stuff.

Cell Theory was eventually formulated in 1838. This is usually credited to Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann. However, many other scientists like Rudolf Virchow contributed to the theory. Cell theory has become the foundation of biology and is the most widely accepted explanation of the function of cells. The three tenets to the cell theory are as described below: All living organisms are composed of one or more cells The cell is the most basic unit of life. All cells arise from pre-existing, living cells. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_theory)

It does not mention they were incorrect, just that other scientists contributed to their theory.

While the fact that we base planetarium projectors on the Ptolemaic model of the universe that was developed almost 2,000 years ago may seem impressive, a better test of the model is how long the model was accepted by society. In this case, the Ptolemaic model was not seriously challenged for over 1,300 years. When and why it finally needed to be replaced will be described in the next subunit. So, it'd be Ptolemy's theory?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ptolemaic model Stated that the earth was the center of the universe so yes :) it would be Ptolemy's theory.

Thank you!
