Why did the start of the Spanish exploration of the western hemisphere correspond to the Catholic conquest of Spain? Gaining the sea ports along the coast allowed Spain to build larger ships. The Catholic conquest provided Spain with the money to explore. The Catholic conquest left Spain with many conquerors and nothing left to conquer. Gaining coastal cities of southern Spain provided the crown with many experienced sailors.
