Help with word problems please.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

2 ducks and 1 pelican

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

= 1 good meal

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hehe

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

o..o why eat a pelican though

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\large \bf (x-{\color{brown}{ h}})^2+(y-{\color{brown}{ k}})^2=r^2\qquad center\ ({\color{brown}{ h,k}})\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they really stretch to make these word problems, don't they? why don't they just ask for the center of the circle?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

general equation for circle \[(x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2\] center is (h,k) look at equation they gave you and try to find h and k

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

well it looks llike h is -4 and k is 0

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

@satellite73 ...because someone will always ask, "why do we have to know where center of circle is?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

apparently it is in outer space where god made some sort of rectangular coordinate system, but only used two dimensions.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

@DarkBlueChocobo , careful its (x-h) so h = positive 4

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

ohhh i see

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

its a perfect universe where all orbits are circular and on horizontal plane :)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

so would it be (4,0) for (h,k)?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yes

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Can i test out one more just to make sure?

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

whut those question marks

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

(x − 7)^2 + (y − 1)^2 = 36

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

T_T

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

(x-7)^2 + (y-1)^2=36

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

so it would be (7,1) for the center

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yep you got it

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

Yay thank you

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

how about (y+3)^2 + (x-2)^2 = 4

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

(3,2)?

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

nope .... i reversed the order to see if you were paying attention h is always with x k is always with y it would be (2,-3)

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

T-T i didnt even realize that you switched it

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

y+3 = y -(-3) --> thats why k = -3

OpenStudy (darkbluechocobo):

wows
