When the temperature of the gas changes from cold to hot, the amount of pressure is ___________. a. decreasing c. stays constant b. increasing d. none of the above

OpenStudy (jfraser):

When atoms are heated, what happens to their \(speed\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im lost in this subject lol

OpenStudy (jfraser):

you should have studied a little bit of kinetic theory first, am i right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Probably. Chemistry isnt a easy subject for me. Just saying.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

ok, so in general, do you know what happens to the speed of atoms when they are heated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No not really. Please explain.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

how would you move if you were put on a hot stove?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fast

OpenStudy (jfraser):

so what do you think happens to atoms when they are heated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They move faster

OpenStudy (jfraser):

exactly

OpenStudy (jfraser):

since it's a gas, the atoms of a gas are free to move in straight lines until they hit the walls of the container. The collisions with the wall create pressure.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

if the gas is heated, the atoms move faster. if the atoms move faster, they hit the wall \(harder\) and \(more \space often\)

OpenStudy (jfraser):

what should happen to the pressure (which is caused by the collisions) when the gas is heated?
