why are atomic numbers always whole numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The atomic number represents the number of protons inside the nucleus of the atom. It will always be a whole number, because it is the count of protons within that nucleus. example: H = 1 proton = atomic number 1. ; Na (sodium) = 11 protons = atomic number 11.
