What economic and social factors in the U.S. led to differing ideas about slavery in the north and the south ? expalin please (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The north was a industry and the south had always been a place of plantations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There was more of a puritan tradition in the North. Also industrial employers could not use slaves; they needed free, mobile, skilled labour. In the South, the cotton industry depended on large-scale manual labour, unpaid and captive

they needed slaves in the south not much in the north.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"The South was primarily an agricultural society with cotton as its biggest crop. Southerners relied heavily on slave labor and stood to lose their livelihoods if slavery was abolished. They viewed the ownership of slaves as their God-given right.

Many argued that slaves were healthier and happier than Northern wage workers. The North, on the other hand, developed busy cities, embraced technology and industry, and built factories staffed by paid workers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The arrival of immigrants made Northern cities diverse. Their economy didn’t rely on slave labor, and by 1860 slavery was almost non-existent in the North.

Even so, Northerners viewed African Americans as inferior, and many Northern states severely limited their rights
