using the addition method find a solution for x & y 12x=5y+5 5y=-1-4x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The addition method of solving systems of equations is also called the method of elimination.

@Cosmichaotic so i have to cancel stuff out ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't really know how to use that method well... I would just solve for one of the variables and plug it in to the other (substitution).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first put the variables on one side(x,y,z...etc), and the constants(no x,y..etc, just numbers) on the other. so you get 12x-5y=5 4x+5y=-1 Now add these two equations up and see whats left. Your goal is to get only one variable by itself. Either for x, or y. If you add it as is, you get 16x=4 so x=1/4. That happened because -5y+5y=0, 12x+4x=16x and 5+(-1)=4. Once you have x, plug it back to either equation to get y. Since that was easy, lets instead eliminate x in the original problem. To do than you have to multiply the second equation by -3 (your not changing the equation since what you did to one side, you also did to the other) so you get 12x-5y=5 -12x-15y=3 Now when you add it you get -20y=8 so y=-2/5. Now when you plug that back into either equation you will see that you get x=1/4
