having a homework problem... what is the daughter nucleus produced when 213Bi undergoes alpha decay... i came up with the answer 20581Ti.. is that correct

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Almost but not quite. Remember \(\alpha\)-decay is the emission of a \(^{4}_{2}\sf He\) particle. So the general formula is:\[\Large ^{a}_{b}\sf X \rightarrow ^{a-4}_{b-2}Y+_{2}^{4}He\] In your case we have:\[\large _{83}^{213} \sf Bi \rightarrow _{83-2}^{213-4} \it Y \sf + _{2}^{4}He\] The isotope created become: \[\Large _{81}^{209}\sf Ti\]

thanks i figured it out before i got to check your response
