Which statement is true? A molecule having a covalent bond can be ionic. A molecule having a covalent bond is always polar. A molecule having a covalent bond may be polar or nonpolar. A molecule having a covalent bond is always nonpolar

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ookawaiioo I have a feeling it is the third one but I am not positive.

OpenStudy (somy):

i support your thought so you can be positive about it :)

OpenStudy (somy):

A molecule having a covalent bond can be ionic. - ridiculous A molecule having a covalent bond is always polar. - not always like, H2, bond is covalent H-H and its non polar A molecule having a covalent bond may be polar or nonpolar. - Bingo! A molecule having a covalent bond is always nonpolar - not always like, HCl, bond is covalent H-Cl and its polar

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

But lets talk about.....what is "covalent" ? Covalent is termed by the difference of electronegativity between the two species. Less than 1.0 = covalent 1.0-1.4 = polar covalent >1.5 = ionic

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

I might be a few units off......

OpenStudy (somy):

@oOKawaiiOo 1.0 is too big 0.2 -0.5 is non polar covalent more than 0.5 is polar covalent if over 2.0 - ionic bond but its slightly different in different places

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

I just looked it up.... it really depends on your source. https://www.chem.wisc.edu/deptfiles/genchem/sstutorial/Text7/Tx71/tx71.html

OpenStudy (somy):

yeah it does :) this current source says > 1.7 ionic 0.4 - 1.7 polar covalent < 0.4 covalent

Thanks to both!!

OpenStudy (somy):

no problem :)
