How many electrons are in the n = 2 orbit for the Periodic Table entry for sodium.

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

What do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (korosh23):

n stands for principal quantum number which n shows the number of the energy level we are dealing with. In this case the energy level is 2. In order to find the number of electrons. We use 2n^2 which in this case replace 2 with n and you get your answer. For more information, you can use n^2 to find the number of orbitals in an energy level.
