Organic Halides being good solvents...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it said it could have a non polar hydrocarbon end and a polar hydrocarbon end..... how is that being a good solvent? is it saying it can dissolve both simultaneously?

A chemical compound consisting of a halogen and another element, especially a strongly electropositive metal such as sodium or potassium. Salt is a halide. If Re

It really depends on the reaction and what you have. you have some alkyl halides, like tetrachloroethylene is a common household cleaning solvent.

okay.. I still don't get how it relates to my question could have a non polar hydrocarbon end and a polar hydrocarbon end making it a good solvent

OpenStudy (thadyoung):

Do you know what a solvents purpose is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to dissolve something, and i know that non polar can only dissolve nonpolar substances and polar can only dissolve polar substances, it says that organic halides can have a nonpolar at one end and polar at another end making it a good solvent. is it saying that its a good solvent because it can dissolve both? what example of a halide that contains something like this? i just cant connect what you said to my question, unless that did but i just cant see it? @thadyoung
