The configuration and other components in the circuit will certainly play an important role in "solving circuit problems."  

In the case of a forward biased diode, you can assume a .7 volts drop across a silicon diode or .3 volts for geranium, for a reversed biased diode you can treat it as a very high value resistor or open circuit, but these are just assumptions and the true value will depend on the circuit type and configuration.
