What is the oxidation # of each C in MgC2O4 ?

OpenStudy (photon336):

What do you think it is?

OpenStudy (lfreeman1285):

Mg is an alkali earth metal, so its oxidation number must be +2. There are four oxygens, each with an oxidation number of -2. Because we want the overall charge of the molecule to be zero, we add up all the oxidation numbers: (+2)+4(2-)+C=0 Now solve for C C=6+ Therefore, the oxidation number for carbon in this instance is 6+
