How can the VSEPR theory be used to determine shapes of molecules?

OpenStudy (photon336):

V = valence S = Shell E = electron P = pair R = repulsion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how do each of those things show the shape...sorry I'm really confused about this

OpenStudy (photon336):

Electron pairs repel eachother so when you're figuring things out like shape the electron pairs are as far a part as possible to minimize repulsion of like charges
