Can anyone enlighten me on the topic of writing poetry with sound techniques? Stuff such as writing in Trochee or Dactyl. I just don't understand the concept of it. Does it rely on consonance or vowels?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I really never heard of Trochee or Dactyl :P I only heard of their sister term, which is iamb :P These links have some good info on them: http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88v/meter.html http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88v/foot.html https://web.cn.edu/kwheeler/documents/Examples%20of%20Iambs.pdf :P

But but but but I found a good resource, I just don't get it though. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like I know what they are but I don't understand it.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

It seems to be based off of stressed and unstressed syllables. It doesn't say vowels or consonants anywhere in what I've read so far :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sooooo... how do I determine if a syllable is stressed or not?

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

That's what I also have no idea about xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What I did before was talk with my hand under my chin and assume that when my chin touches my hand, it's a stressed syllable, but that doesn't seem to add up with the source I found. v.v

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jabez177, all I need help with is how to determine whether a syllable is stressed or not. Could you enlighten me?

alones (alones):

Oh yea wait so what?? :3 I remeber my mom when she was making a poem up she would usually pick the right words that would rhyme and ummm, the stress would fall on the right place..i don't really iunderstand your question /;

pooja195 (pooja195):

i've never heard of those ._. i've heard of ONOMATOPOEIA's and that. There's more here: https://wikis.engrade.com/poeticsounddevices Here's a reliable source, my teacher pointed this out to me when we were doing poetry http://www.poetryfoundation.org/learning/glossary-term/trochee http://www.poetryfoundation.org/learning/glossary-term/dactyl I'm sorry if I didn't help and provided only links (i know how annoying it is when someone does that >.>) but I tried ;p what more can this cute baby do? :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It helps a little, but what I need is to find out how to determine whether a syllable is stressed or unstressed.

pooja195 (pooja195):

Well Dactyl "A metrical foot consisting of an accented syllable followed by two unaccented syllables; the words “poetry” and “basketball” are both dactylic. Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light Brigade” is written in dactylic meter. (See also double dactyl.)"
