OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

A wheelchair ramp is to be built beside the steps to the campus library. Find the angle of elevation of the 26-foot ramp, to the nearest tenth of a degree, if its final height is 6 feet.

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

The height (the opposite side of the triangle) is 6 and the hypotenuse is 26. The sine of that angle = opposite/hypotenuse The sine of that angle = 6 / 26 To find the angle, look up the ARC SINE of (6/26)

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Can you try and solve that?

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

I am dividing 6 by 26 right?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

correst

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

or correct even LOL

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

0.230

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

correct?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes, and now you have to look up the arc sine of .230 The arc sine means the angle whose sine is a certain value. For example, the sine of 45 degrees is .707 So, the arc sine of .707 is 45 degrees. Do you know how to look up an arc sine?

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

your saying with my calculator? pressing second then it sine-1 ?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

I think that's how the calculator key would read: sin^-1

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

yeah

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

unfortunately though i do not have my calculator with me

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Okay, there's an online calculator right here: http://www.1728.org/trigcalc.htm

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Input .230 then click the "asin" button.

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

13.297

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

13.297 degrees is correct

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

thanks :)

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

glad to help out

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

do you have any websites or advice or anything else that would help me out with this material to get more practice

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Well there's my website (which you just visited). If you look at the graphic at the top of the page, you'll see all 6 trigonometric definitions. Here's a page for beginners: http://www.1728.org/trigtutr.htm

OpenStudy (rxse.gxld):

ok thanks! hope this helps

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Thank you - it should be of some help. :-)
