Mapped the ocean bottom - Matthew Maury (1806 - 1873) was an American astronomer, oceanographer, historian, meteorologist,  and cartographer. He was hailed as the 'father of modern oceanography' and 'pathfinder of the seas' . His system of recording oceanographic data was used extensively by Sailors worldwide. It was also used to develop charts of major ocean trade routes.
