Strategies for the "I Say" Part of an Essay So far in this course, we have been working on the "They Say" part of your essays, the introduction in which you join a conversation by fairly and accurately summarizing what others have already said about the topic at hand. This week, we're going to continue to use all of the moves we've practiced so far, but we are also going to begin working on writing a better "I Say" response. There are plenty of strategies for presenting your own ideas, but this week we are going to experiment with the "'Yes,' 'No' or 'Okay, but'" strategy! Most of the time when you respond to something someone else says or writes, you will agree, disagree, or respond with some combination of the two. The Source Essay This week's topic is the Federal minimum wage, which is currently set at $7.25 per hour and has remained at that level since 2009. Recently, you may recall, the Bernie Sanders campaign and other advocates of increasing the national minimum wage have called for a new minimum of $15.00 per hour. In this editorial, the editorial staff of The Washington Post support an increase in the minimum wage, but they also argue that $15.00 is too much, period, and they explain their alternative recommendation. Your Writing Task Read the editorial and decide where you stand on the issue. Do you agree (with a difference), disagree (with your explanation why), or agree with some of the editorial while disagreeing on some points? Write a two-paragraph essay using the "They Say / I Say" strategy. Paragraph One: Introduce and summarize the source author's point in a way that is fair, accurate and that includes at least one well-selected direct quotation and one indirect or partial quotation from the editorial. Be sure to include the source author's credentials and identify the original publisher. Paragraph Two: Transition into the "I Say" part of your essay by using one of the sentence templates below. Remember that this transition will prepare your reader for the rest of what you have to say, and so remember to stay focused on that idea. Make your transition sentence the first sentence of your second paragraph. According to your own confidence level, you may modify the template to fit your writing style and rhetorical strategy. Review the rubric before you write your essay and before you upload your essay to Schoology. Note that essays are now worth 25 points. TEMPLATES FOR THE TRANSITION Here are the sentence templates from which you can choose for this assignment. Use one of these sentence templates as the transition between your first paragraph (They Say) and your second paragraph (I Say). NOTE: "X" is the source author. Disagree and Explain Why "X is mistaken because he/she overlooks _____." "X's claim that _____ rests upon the questionable assumption that _____." "By focusing on _____, X misses the deeper problem of _____." Agree but with a Difference "_____'s insights are extremely useful because they shed light on the difficult problem of ______." "Readers unfamiliar with X's position may be interested also to know that _____." Agree and Disagree at the Same Time "Although I disagree with much that X says, I fully endorse his point that ____." "Although I agree with X up to a point, I cannot accept his overall conclusion that _____." "X is right that ____, but she/he seems on more dubious ground when she/he claims that _____."" Although I recognize that _____, I still insist that _____."
