Learning Goal: To explore how the human body is able to maintain stability while adjusting to changing external conditions The Phenomenon Anna Bågenholm, a Swedish radiologist, fell into a mountain stream while skiing. She was underneath the ice for 80 minutes and her body temperature fell to 56oF. Doctors slowly warmed her body, and after months in an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) she fully recovered. Watch the news report about Anna’s story - as you watch, write down some things you notice and wonder about. ***IF YOU CAN’T WATCH THE VIDEO, GOOGLE SEARCH “ANNA BAGENHOLM’S STORY” AND WRITE FILL OUT THE WORKSHEET or USE THE ARTICLE ON PAGE 3 THAT EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPENED Things I noticed… Anna fell into a frozen mountain stream while skiing. She was trapped under the ice for about 80 minutes. Her body temperature dropped to 56°F. Her heart stopped, but doctors were able to save her. She fully recovered after months in the ICU. Things I wonder about… How was her brain able to survive without oxygen? How did the cold help her body instead of killing her?
well now think about cryofreeze, their is oxygen in water and ice is made of water, so in technically since shes frozen in ice the water is releasing the oxygen it has, but its so little that it only funnels to the brain
