Winchesters Community Bank charges its customers $6 per month plus 15cents per check for the use of a standard checking account. Thomas had a checking account there for 8 months and was charged $53.10 in service charges. How many checks did he write during that period?

$6 per month. 8 months. You know that he had to have at least spend $42 in service charge. Subtract that from his total charge. 15 cents per check. Divide whats left of his charges by .15.

74checks = 11.1 dollars
8 months of service, $6 a month = $42

$42+$11.1=$53.10
