Good morning everyone! I have just started this course. I have no programming experience. Should I start with C or with MIT's python?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For beginner, I recommend start with MIT 6.0 Intro Computer Science , It will teach you programming basics, what are the same in any programming language...

Thanks very much for the reply. What if I study both of these languages at the same time.like-First studying python & then reading corresponding section in C (I'm using Schaum outline programming in C). I guess it will help me understand the relatively difficult syntax of C better.....What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I started in Java in my school (It's quite close to C++), Programming Language is just a tool... First you must train your thinking like programmer, not the language skills you use. C can be confusing for complete beginner. C programming is thinking like PC. Python at this point, will help you to solve problems. And programming can be defined as: "Real life problem solving". I hope you get the idea ;)

Thanks very much for the insights, kalvianss!!

While it's possible to learn programming with either (any) language. Python is a good one because there are relatively fewer ways to fall into situations that are considered 'undefined' by the language specification. So there are relatively fewer pitfalls for the inexperienced programmer to get caught by.

Python is used by the really big internet companies like Google and Yahoo. That is a pretty good indicator of its power IMO.

I learned C first just b/c I wanted to learn how Unix-like systems work. As my first language I can say I was a bit slow to learning it. But now I'm learning .py and I can say that my C experience Allowed me to pick up quite a bit of python in just a week. And C++ I got the OO side to that in a few days.

Hi everyone, I too am new to this course (completed 3 lectures). This query has exactly outlined my dilemma. Very Helpful. Will continue 6.00 with renewed vigour. :) Thanx you guys.
