I'm just getting started as a beginner and wonder if this is the best course i should use

It will be very challenging - but what do you expect this is how they teach it at MIT. Come here often/while you're hacking, ask questions and others will help.

I just downloaded everything that they said to and have been practicing with the first lesson but I'm unsure of how to make the computer ask a question or arrange the mathematics

Chris makes a lot of sense. As a total beginner myself, I found PS 0 kind of easy, though I did watch several lectures before typing a single line of code. I also took a peek at some lectures made available by Stanford involving Karel the Robot and Java, which helped me a lot. There's a lot of help in this community...and MIT produces great material. As far as Python goes - personally I find this language to be ideal to start, as the syntax and structure is very straightforward, and rather easy.
