I'm doing a problem dealing with population. it has a table with it expressing the population for 6 years.  I am suppossed to compute the average rate of population growth.  How would I do that?

There are several ways to attack this problem.  Do they want the average rate of change for each interval (by day, by month, by year, etc?) or do they just want the start value plus the end value divided by time?

they want the change from 1950 to 1960

Then the average rate can be given by 
(change in population from 1950 to 1960)/(time interval)
