6. Each of the following is an example of one of the properties for addition of whole numbers. Identify the property of each.

6 + 8 = 8 + 6
(6 + 3) + 0 = 6 + 3
(6 + 8) + 2 = (8 + 6) + 2
(5 + 3) + 2 = 5 + (3 + 2)

The first one is called Commutative Property.
That’s because 6 and 8 “commute” or “switch places” with each other.

The second has a lot of names but I call it the “Additive Identity Property”
since 0 is the additive identity.
No matter what you add to zero, you get that number back.

The third is again the Commutative Property.

The last is the Associative Property,
because first you “associated” or “grouped” together 5 and 3,
but then you “associated” 3 and 2.
The Associative Property for addition says that you can do this with addition.

Again, this is just vocabulary.
It’s nice to know, but not essential for understanding math
