an artist is making a painting of three squares, one inside the other. He has 12 different colors to choose from. How many different paintings could he make if the squares are all different colors?

12*11*10=1320

to solve the problem don't you do something along the lines of 12+11+10+9 ect.?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, it's multiplying not adding. and only the first 3 numbers because you have three squares. basically its 12 choices for the first square, 11 for the second, and 10 for the third.

why do you multply?
