my son is trying to add/subtranct mixed number fractions. Please help.

example:
5 1/2+ 3/4
first we must convert the mixed fraction(5 1/2) to an improper fraction. we do this by first mulitiplying 5 times the denominator, which is 2. 5*2=10. we then add that to the numerator(1)
10+1=11
we use 11 as the new numerator. : 11/5

so it would be 11/2 + 3/4 ? I'm not sure where you get 11/5

next, to add 11/2 +3/4 we need to have the same denominator,
which we could turn the 11/2 into 44/4
we can then add. 44/4+3/4= 48/4

Also, if they don't want improper fractions, just add the fractional components seperately first. Then simplify that to a mixed fraction if it's improper. Then just add the sum of the whole components of the mixed fractions to the new mixed fraction.
