how do i know if a transformation flips or shifts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no one??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so lets take a any function for example: Y=3x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey math freak help me with find derivative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plzzz i have a test :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gfmate wait a sec, im helping someone out. wit till i finish.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, we can tell if the graph of that function is going to be shifted or "flipped" just by looking at the function shift: Y=3x^2 + 6 this shows that this graph was moved 6 units to the right. "flip" : when we mean "flip" we refer to when the graph is reflected across the axis, as if a mirror reflection. one basic way we can tell this is if the coefficient is negated. Y=-3x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=3x^2+6 means it moved 6 units up...not right..,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right, and if it is subtracted it is a shift down. my bad, thought too quick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no worries...mathfreak...u know anything about greens or stokes theorem?
