2x^2 + 7x = 4 how do i solve this by completing the square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a^2+2ab+b^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a=2 find out what b is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats not by completing the square tho is it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this method will help you in long term but if you want shortcut I can show you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you rather learn shortcut?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just want to know the step by step because i have the answers in the back of the book i just cant get the right answers but my math is all correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Short cut 1) Factor out 2 2(x^2 + 7/2x) 2) Take Half of x term 7/2 * 1/2 is 7/4 3) Square it 49/16 4) Since you added(49/16 * 2) you also need add to other side 4+49/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay let me write that down

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have just completed a square 2(x^2+7/2x+49/16) Factor 2(x+7/4)^2=4+49/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide both side by 2 then I think you can take it from there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it be (4+ 49/8) / 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got 5.0625

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!
