Joe has a small pond on his farm.He wants to build a footbridge from point A to point B.He marked a spot at point C so that angle B is a right angle. What is the approximate distance from point A to point B? A.23 ft B.24ft C.25ft D.26ft

OpenStudy (oaktree):

It must be 24ft, because to be integer values it must be a 7-234-25 triangle.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Not 234, 24.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Which means that because the hypotenuse must be 25, the AB side must be 24.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

That help any?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup thx very much

OpenStudy (oaktree):

You know the families of right triangles, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (oaktree):

O.K. then. Just for anyone out there that doesn't know them, they're triplets of numbers that work for the Pythagorean triples.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thc

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Some of them are 3-4-5, 7-24-25, and 8-15-17.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

The biggest number is always the hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Meaning the side opposite the right angle.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Just a shortcut for using the Pythagorean Theorem.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Which is a^2+b^2=c^2, where a and b are legs and c is the hypotenuse (duh!)
