The solutions says that only 3 is a critical number. Why not -3 also?

of which equation?  -3 should also be a critical number of the second equation, but I don't understand how the first equation relates to the problem

well ultimately i have to find the extrema of the y = 3 - l t-3 l ....so i guess i figured that absolute values had something to do with it but i wasn't exactly sure
