find the arc length of f(x)=x^2/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is a formula for arc length involving an integral that I don't want to type out. However, you do need to find the derivative of f, which in this case is just x. Then plug into your formula for arc length and chug it through the integral. Fan me if this helps. Thanks :p

i have the formula but i had trouble solving it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok to solve whats in the integral, you need to use trig substitutions. Did you learn trig substitutions in class? So in this case, I would substitute x=secθ

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have to find the derivative first, not the integral

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah the derivative is x like i said before

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isn't it x/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Bring down the power, which is 2, and that cancels out with the 2 as the denominator. So you are left with x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this what i did x^2/2--> 2^-1x^2--->4^-1X

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2^-1x^2--->4^-1X this is an error. Because 2^-1(2^1)=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooops I mean 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When you multiply two numbers with same base, then you add the exponent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is very tricky lol, i dint even notice it. if i get stuck ill post. please check to c if i need help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure. But make sure you fan me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

forsure:) im going to do it rightnow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did it
