A clothing store has discounted the price of a sweater by 20%. If the sale price of the sweater is 49.95, what was the original price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

59.95

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you got at 20% discount on the sweater, that means you paid 80% of the original price. Here's an algebra equation: .8x = 49.95, divide 49.95 by .8 to get 62.4375 which rounds to 62.44.

What you could also do, in another way do this: 20% = 0.20 0.2X49.95$ = 9.99$ Then you add 9.99$ + 49.99$ = 59.98$ That's the answer , the original price is 59.98$

If that helped at all fan me :D

I'm crying, it would seem that the discount applies to the original price, not the sale price. 20% of 49.95 is not the original discount. Branlegr seems to have a more logical approach.
