First, I should say that the actual capacity of the tank is irrelevant. We'll note use t for our variable time in minutes. Jake: Starts with 50 and fills up the tank at 10 gallons every minute. The total amount of water he puts in the tank is 50 + 10t, where t is the time. Karla: Starts with 100 and fills up the tank at 5 gallons every minute. The total amount of water she puts in the tank is 100 + 5t, where t is the time. We want to know where these total amounts are equal, so 50 + 10t = 100 + 5t. We solve for t --> 5t = 50 --> t = 10. The time is 10 minutes. We plug t into one of the equations 50 + 10(10) = 150 gallons. So at 10 minutes and 150 gallons do Jake and Karla have the same amount of water.
