________ is a transformation that slides a figure horizontally and vertically..what could this be please?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

I dont recall it is has a particular name, but: In graphs, you shift the graph left and right by adjusting the "x" value. for example: y = 5(x)^2 +3; This can be shifted to the left 7 units like by adding (-7) to the value of "x". y= 5(x-7)^2 +3. If we want to raise or lower the graph, then we have to adjust the value of 'y". Say we want to raise the graph by 14 units, we would do this: y= 5(x-7)^2 +3+14.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

sorry, but a few typos. It should say: y = 5(x)^2 +3; This can be shifted to the left 7 units like by adding (7) to the value of "x". y= 5(x+7)^2 +3.

ok, thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know the name?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

I am thinking it is "phase shift" but I aint certain.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a "shift" is a transformation that slides the graph.

Ok thank you. The kids I tutor thought it might be a tanslation. I was filling in and I am not very versed in math. Thank you for your help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They even said a slide but I think you are right with the phase shift.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a horizontal shift goes side to side; and a vertical shift goes up and down. I doubt they have a fancy latin name for it, cause mathmeticians are pretty boring :)

Ok, thank you...lol
