how to write an linear equation given the slope 3/5 and the point (-4,5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first you should graph it so you can find what point is on the y intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i already graphed it, but i need to know how to algebraically.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right so what is your y intercept on the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because to do it algebraically you want to put it into slope-intercept form which is y=mx+b m being your slope and b be ing your y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so your answer is y=3/5x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this means that (0,-3) is the y intercept and if you use your slope you can graph it by going over 3and up 5 for each point.. make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that makes sense... however, is there a way to find this using math like a formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm no as far as I know that is how you do it....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright thanks for the help. i was just wondering cause my math teacher was trying to show us a different way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh Idk anyother way but no problem:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have another question... what happens if you cant find a y intercept. as in the line is in between the coordinates. i cant determine the intercept like i think it would be a fraction or something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well there is always going to be a y intercept and it very well can be a fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have a specific example?
