If 2x^2 - x + 6 is subtracted from x^2 + 3x-2, what is the answer? (Any ideas on where to start, operations wise?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x^{2} + 3x - 2 -(2x ^{2} - x + 6)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Make sure the part being subtracted is in parentheses. Then distribute the negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK, I thought maybe you'd distribute. So you'd distribute by adding x^2 to 2x^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Distribute by multiplying the -1 through the part you are subtracting.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(x ^{2}+3x+2)-(2x ^{2}-x+6 )= -x ^{2}+4x-4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it's a -2 - 6, so it becomes - 8 on the end.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You just had the sign of the 2 flipped :)

ohh yeah..sry ...
