find x, give your answer in fractions: x = 5 * (2-x) + 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone who helps me will get a new fan :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know the answer is 1.83333333333 but i need it in fractions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[x=5(2-x)+1\rightarrow x=10-5x+1\]Add 5x to both sides,\[6x=10+1 \rightarrow 6x=11\]Divide both sides by 6,\[x=\frac{11}{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i leave it like this, or do i have to make it like 1 5/6 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Depends...it doesn't really matter unless the question stipulates. Mathematicians leave fractions in this form - 'improper fraction' - because we'd have to put it into this form anyway to do any further mathematics on it. If you like, you can reduce it down to \[x=\frac{11}{6}=\frac{6+5}{6}=\frac{6}{6}+\frac{5}{6}=1+\frac{5}{6}=1\frac{5}{6}\]but I wouldn't bother.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thanx, so in an exam i would just leave answers in improper fractions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just check with your teacher on what they want you to do. Like I said, UNLESS the question says to do something with it, just leave it - 11/6 and 1+5/6 are equivalent numbers.
