What is the difference between mitochondrial DNA and the DNA found in a gamete?

OpenStudy (tim):

Well, I know that gamete DNA is haploid, and gametes combine to form a zygote during sexual reproduction. Mitochondrial DNA is usually based along by the mother...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In a gamete there are all 23 of the human chromosomes, as opposed to a normal cell where there are 46 chromosomes (two copies of each). Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is one circular chromosome and is totally separate from nuclear DNA. Tim is right that mtDNA is maternally inherited as only ova (eggs) contain mitochondria.

Mitochondrial DNA is used for forensics...gamete DNA is reproductive (BiologyOnline.org)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mitochondrial dna is seen inside mitochodria. Oter one is seen inside nucleusof the cell. Mitochondrial dna is important in certain form of diseases like MELAS, MERRF, etc.....It is transferred to the zygote only from the maternal side ie ovum. So the disease is transferred to the offspring only if a mother has a mitochodrial dna defect.
