v(t)=t^2+8t-2 what is the axis of symmetry?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-b/2a gives you the axis of symmetry

OpenStudy (amistre64):

well, not an x or y axis persay.... but the center of the thing :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if it aint centerd, it aint got no axial symmetry

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its centerd at -4.... so I would take a gander and say no axis of symmetry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The axis of symmetry is x=-4, by x=-b/2a. I don't see why you would say it has no axis of symmetry..

OpenStudy (amistre64):

It has a vertex, but it is not symmetrical to the x or y axis.... its a big "U" graph that is off centerd.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is symmetrical about the line x=-4. It doesn't have to be centered to the x or y-axis to be symmetrical.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

axis of symmetry MEANS does it spin about the y or x axis; just definitional stuff....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No. The axis of symmetry is any line about which the parabola is symmetrical. http://www.mathwords.com/a/axis_symmetry.htm

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you could be right; but what am I thinking of then?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so my first inclination was correct eh .... go figure :)
