Okay, this might be a little unfair to you because of the terminology. This is a trapezoid, and a trapezoid has area given by,\[A=\frac{a+b}{2}h\]where a is the length of one base, b is the length of the other, and h is the height (I'll send a picture after this). Now, you're asked to find the *average* base length. Well, if a and b are your base lengths, the average is the same kind of average you'd get when trying to find the average of some numbers. For example, the average of 5 and 3 is\[\frac{5+3}{2}=\frac{8}{2}=4\]Notice we ADDED the numbers, then divided by the number of numbers we had (here, we had two numbers). Now, knowing how to take the average of some numbers, the average of a and b here is just\[\frac{a+b}{2}\]But that's in your equation for area! So, the average base length in your problem is given by\[\frac{a+b}{2}=\frac{A}{h}=\frac{156}{6}=26\]
