g(u,v)=ucos(u+v) what is dg/du ? what is dg/dv ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Du (u cos(u+1)) u cos(u+v) -u sin(u+v) Dv(1cos(1+v)) -u sin(u+v) is what I understand it to be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you saying solve by substitiution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*substitution

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no... I am assuming that u and v are independant of each other, and that Du is the derivative when v is a constant; and Dv is the derivative when u is held constant.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the (1) is just a place holder to remind me that it is held constant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh that's a great way to put it ! Thanks!
