which of the following expressions has a value of 27? a.-[12-53+14] b.[12-53+14] c.[12]+[-53]+[14] d.[-12]-[53]-[-14]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which one would you expect to be an answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- (12-53+14) is your solution. jump the negative into the box and you get -12-53+14 and when you do the addiction and subtractions. You will get your solution of positive 27.

OpenStudy (radar):

The answer is correct but the explanation of jumping the negative into the box had an error in the results. You get -12+53-14 Note the differtence in the signs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I change that solution! actually the solution is D. because if you add -14 plus positive 53 you'll get postive 41 and then subtract -14 from that. you will get your solution of postive 27.

OpenStudy (radar):

Choice D gives a result of -51.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Guys the answer is clearly B... [12-53+14] resolving this we get [-27] and gets out of a module as 27.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is a) -(-27) which is 27.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OT.. its not -(-27) but -[-27]... -[-27] = -27 as far as i know.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Your solution is D.

OpenStudy (radar):

Cutie0430 Look closely at choice a. Think of that - sign to the left as a -1 then it would look like this: -1(12-53+14) This means when you clear the parenthesis you are simply multplying each number by a -1. Remember the rule of multiplying bhy signs -*_ =+ +*- = - so you get -12+53-14 when you combine the -12 and -14 you get -26 now combine that with the +53 you will get the result you are looking for

Radar () and [] are not the same things. One is paranthesis one is module and they operate differently as well. (-1) = -1 but [-1] = 1

OpenStudy (radar):

Are you thinking of the |-1| =1 absolute value indicator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i believe thats what she meant. otherwise why not just use parentheses? Well i might be wrong.

OpenStudy (radar):

I don't know what level Cutie is operating at. I will research the term "module" and the symbol [].. I have been wrong many times and this may be one of those times LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahahha... :)) by module i do mean absolute value indicator. :))) Thats what we have seen back in high school and it was soviet education system :))) however |x| is correct version. you are right about that.

OpenStudy (radar):

Thanks Balash, for the clarification. Good luck with your studies.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks Radar. No problem... and about that good luck... Thats the thing i need the most right now. Check this out if you have a little time. www.giveforward.com/saveaneducation
