Find x so the l is parallel to m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please hold for attachment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

cant open it, dont have microsoft office....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you got a PrntScrn button? and a paint program?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, Can I send via email?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

PrntScrn is one of those buttons that noone ever ueses up there by the scroll lock and the sysRq keys. It takes a screenshot like this that you can open in paint and send as a picture. and no email....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, I will try it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Aside: amistre are you running windows 95?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

nah, its 2000 i think, maybe 98

OpenStudy (amistre64):

windows xp

OpenStudy (amistre64):

it should open with my openoffice software, but it aint....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

got it... 7x-10 = 3x+70

OpenStudy (amistre64):

when these equations are equal, you get parallel lines

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, because I have snag it on my computer and don't know how to turn it off. Thanks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do you know how to make these equal? or rather, solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ok.... what we have here a an = sign meaning that the equation needs to be balanced at all times, whatever you add or take away from one side has to be done to the other too....does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so 7x-3x=? and -10+70=80... I'm lost

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good...good.. that means that 4x = 80 right? now divide both sides by 4 and waht do we end up with?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if you have 7 xs and take 3 xs away, that just leaves us 4 xs...or 4x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm with you

OpenStudy (amistre64):

now we want to get rid of that 4 that is hugging next to the x. we do that by dividing it by 4 to get: (4/4)x = 80/4 whats this equal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats correct, so 1 x = 20 and thats the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you would alway divide in the third step?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i think of it this way, when you are trying to get a variable..like x.... all by itself on one side, I first send the neighbors home....and that is anything that is attached by addition or subtraction to our variable...whats next is the more intimate stuff, the ''spouse'' i call it.... you get rid of it by multiplying by its reciprocal.... by whatever that number is turned upside down.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the reciprocal of 4 is 1/4 4 times 1/4 = 4/4 = 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the recirocal of 1/6 is 6; 1/6 times 6 = 6/6 = 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool, I think I got it:) Yes, it make sense now

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you sooooo very much. wow
