wtf is a slope?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

usually it has snow stuck to it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

srsly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like a math one

OpenStudy (amistre64):

same cocept, it is the change in elevation from one point to another

OpenStudy (amistre64):

*concept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx.... now how d u find the y intersept on a table

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a hill has slope, a roof has slope, etc etc etc...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the y interept simply means the palce that the graph crosses the y axis. the y axis is also know as x = 0. so on a table of values, the y intercept will be the value for whatever the x=0 point will indicate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i love u...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol ..... your the first ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now to make an equation?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

to make an equation we need "data" ..... or if we are given an equation we simply need to draw it on a graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i gots data now how to put it in to an equation?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if we have a table of x and y values, we can probably deduce a relation between x and y to create an equation that would mimic the data. Can you give me the "list" of cpprdinates? (x,y) style

OpenStudy (amistre64):

....coordinates I think im haveing a stroke sometimes :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x -6 -4 -2 0 2 4 y -10 -7-4-1 25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops wrong style

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(-6,-10) (-4,-7)...like this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ok...lets see if the slope of between the first 2 matches the slope between the first and last..... if they do, we know its a straight line..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

slope = change in "y"/ change in "x" y1-y2/x1-x2 -4--7 -4+7 3 ------- = ----- = --- -6--10 -6+10 4 our forst two points have a slope of 3/4

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no they dont.... it helps if I keep track of these things lol

OpenStudy (amistre64):

-10--7 -10+7 -3 -------- = ------- = --- -6--4 -6+4 -2 slope is 3/2...thats better

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ahhhh

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y =-10, -7, -4, -1, 25, ___ x= -6, -4, -2, 0, 2, 4 we seem to be missing a value...

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y =-10, -7, -4, -1, 2, 5 might be better x= -6, -4, -2, 0, 2, 4

OpenStudy (amistre64):

"y" changes by +3 --------------- all the way so our slope is a line "x" changes by +2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y = (3/2)x + b; where b is the value of our y intercept.. y = (3/2)x - 1 would be our equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (amistre64):

does it make sense? or whould we "peel the onion of math":)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PEEL

OpenStudy (amistre64):

........... ok. where do you get lost at. Finding the slope by the data given? or putting our information together into an equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...lets see if the slope of between the first 2 matches the slope between the first and last..... if they do, we know its a straight line.. from their

OpenStudy (amistre64):

y =-10(+3), -7(+3), -4(+3), -1(+3)..... with each step here, the value of y increase by a value of "3". right? x= -6, -4, -2, 0, 2, 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x= -6(+2), -4(+2), -2(+2), 0(+2), 2(+2)... and the value of "x" increases by "2" right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):
