Hey can anyone help me with the pythagorean theorem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[a^2+b^2=c^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A and b are sides of a triangle, while c is the hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know that but what i mean is that it is a promblem i need help with

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok what is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says a ladder 58 feet long reachers a point on a building that is 42 feet above the ground. if the ground is horizontal. how many feet from the foot of the building is the foot of the ladder?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so the ladder makes a triangle with a building. One side is 42ft, the other side is unknown, and the hypotenuse is 58ft. So based on this we plug these numbers into the equation. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i will try it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what side is 42?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

brb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The height of the triangle is 42, but for the sake of the equation it doesn't matter whether you say 42 is a or b.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would have a²+42²=58² ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes and then you solve for a. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay, i graduate primary school :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what the heck ok anyway i hace two more i need help with two also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you solve for 'a' brookiecookie?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya hold on im fiquring it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u guys ready for the next promblem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok two vertical poles are 16 feet apart. what is the minimum number of feet in length of a rope that connects the top pf the 50 foot peole to the top of the 20 foot pole

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Draw a picture of the poles. Maybe you can see it better.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??? help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So we do the triangle thing again. We know one side is 16ft what is the length of the other side? We are solving for the hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for these, it always helps me see it, if i draw a picture - even if its just lines and numbers next to them so with the two poles and distance between the poles, you can see the difference in pole height

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok
