ok the question i need help with is:two vertical poles are 16 feet apart. what is the minimum number of feet in length of a rope that connects the top pf the 50 foot peole to the top of the 20 foot pole

I think the question is just asking for the distance between the top of the 50 ft pole to the top of the 20ft pole. I don't think the anchor situation has anything to do with it.

16ft is the distance between the two poles so the base of a triangle. 30ft is the difference in height from the top of the 20ft pole to the top of the 50ft pole.

Yes because c represents a hypotenuse which would be the diagonal line from the top of the 50ft pole to the top of the 20ft pole.

if you are putting it into shapes, a and b aren't points on the rectangle, they are the length of the side of the rectangle

Ok...so if you cut a rectangle in half diagonally, then you have a triangle. The diagonal of the rectangle is the hypotenuse, c. So a and b are the sides of the rectangle.

Ok so go back to the equation \[a^2+b^2=c^2\] a is any side of the triangle, and b is just the other side. C is the hypotenuse, which is the diagonal.

Nope. They are looking for that diagonal length, which depends on the other two sides of the triangle. No need to cut anything in half. You see two triangles so just pretend one isn't there. A=10ft B=30ft c=?
