The figure shows a cubical box sphere that just fits inside. That is, the length, width, and the height of the box are each equal to the diameter of the ball. What percent to the nearest tenth of the volume of the box is not occupied by the ball?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the volume of a sphere is.....cant recall,...but: the volume of the sphere - volume of the box = the amount of volume that is free. volume that is free ---------------- x 100 = percent of box the is free of the sphere volume of the box

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the radius of the sphere is half the measurement of the side of the box. that might be useful

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i got that backwards didnt I :) volume of the box - volume fo the sphere = free volume...... I feel soooo silly now lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o.k. thanks!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if I were to write a formula for it: where Bv = Box volume; Sv = Sphere volume Bv - Sv ------ x100 = Answer. Bv
