Hi,
I am a first year engineering student. I did programming for the first time in a course and liked it. I have leaned basics of C up to data structures, recursions etc. I really want to keep my knowledge growing. Can anyone tell me what I can do and what resources I can get to do this. Right now, I just downloaded a lot of books and hoping to read them in summer. Let me know what you guys suggest. May be what you did as an independent learner or any idea at all. Thnx

Honestly the best way to learn more, it to apply it. As you come across questions you look up the answer and apply it. Start small, something you mostly know how to do and keep going up. There are also a few websites out there that have programming challenges that might be worth looking at.

Yes, apply what you've learned. Try to find a project for yourself - preferably something that seems too difficult so you can actually learn instead of revising. Joining an open source project could work - there's always some bug fixing to do so you can start small and you're likely to find people willing to coach you.

Also, don't focus too much on specific technologies or languages at this point.

C will kill you before you finish your first working software project. I'd go with a higher level language first, like C# or Java and focus on producing software. Later on if you want more control over what you are programming, you can always learn the low level stuff.
