What is the y-intercept of the line on your graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

y-intercept is the value of y when x=0, this coincides with where the graph crosses the y-axis It can be found for any line given a point and the slope of the line -> y=mx + b ->b = y - mx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The point that is located on the y-axis (: [the vertical line]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

looks like you gotta give it you best guess.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

If you know the data points on the graph use them to find the slope -> m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) use this to determine y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hah! but only one data point is for sure... gotta follow line and guess at it lol

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

pretty sure you dont have to guess using the 2 points (11,10132), (15,10180) i get a slope of 12 and y-intercept of 10,000

OpenStudy (anonymous):

graph only show on point on a line that is known. how you gonna know the other point with accuracy? you aint. gotta guess.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you aint wrong, but you aint right lol

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

lol ok yes i guessed but it was a pretty educated guess plus it makes sense for the initial value to be a rounded figure like 10,000 :)

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ermamoss does this make sense now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am lost

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok you are given this graph with a linear line every linear line is of the form y=mx+b where m is the slope of the line and b is where it crosses the y-axis ok? where are you at in school?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am in college algebra i get everything except the slope and the y-intercept

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok for the line the x-values are the input and the y-values are the output slope is looking at how much y changes for every change of 1 in x rise/run go to the graph pick a point and then count how far you go up and over to get to the next point, thats slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=mx+b the 'm' is the y-slope, rise over run. the 'b' is the y-intercept, the point that is on the y-axis.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

gotta go good luck

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope is how much line leans up or down

OpenStudy (anonymous):

intercept means to catch the ball. y line catches the ball at what spot on it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That a good way thanks
