Will a parabola always have two x intercepts?

myininaya (myininaya):

no

myininaya (myininaya):

sometimes it won't cross the x-axis

myininaya (myininaya):

it might cross the x-axis once like f(x)=x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh lol thx (;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ya i just did that on my graphing calculator

myininaya (myininaya):

example of a parabola not crossing the x axis is f(x)=x^2+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah i seeee

myininaya (myininaya):

example of a parabola crossing the x-axis is f(x)=x^2-2

myininaya (myininaya):

that last example was it crossing twice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx u too virtus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it depends on the value of the discriminant (b^2-4*a*c), if the discriminant is positive there are two intercepts, one intercept i f the discriminant is 0 and none if the discriminant is negative.

myininaya (myininaya):

so either 0,1, or 2 times a parabole will cross

myininaya (myininaya):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and ya i typed all of the equations u said into my graphing calculator and got everything u said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o i seeee o.o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u ppl should be teachers or somethin lol ^^

myininaya (myininaya):

lol
